Dr. Seyed Hamid Mirkhani (born 1951 - died 2004) was a famous heart surgeon and the founder of the first transplant bank in Iran. After receiving his diploma, he was accepted in the field of physiotherapy at the University of Tehran in 1971, but due to his interest in medicine, he participated in the entrance exam again in 1972 and studied medicine at the University of Tehran. In 1980, he received a degree in general medicine and immediately begun a surgical residency. In 1984 he became a member of the faculty of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Mirkhani was admitted to Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 1984 in the field of thoracic surgery and studied there for three years. In 1989, he left for Sweden to take a specialized course in cardiovascular surgery and heart transplantation. He completed his course at Herfield Hospital in England and then returned to Iran.
In 1993, he became the director of the Imam Khomeini Hospital complex in Tehran and remained in that position until the end of his life. In 2004, he received a master's degree in cardiovascular surgery.
In 1994, Dr. Mirkhani established the first transplant bank in the country. He performed valuable and important services for the advancement of Iranian medicine, especially in the field of cardiovascular surgery, including the use of a homogeneous aortic valve in the mitral position, the first simultaneous heart and lung transplantation and Batista surgery for patients with severe heart failure. Dr. Mirkhani passed away on the evening of Sep 6th 2004, at the age of 53 due to a heart complication and was buried in Behesht Zahra Monastery. He was a benevolent physician, calm, kind, polite, humble, and in the service of the poor.
